Building the galaxy

Notes on what's new in Parallax and what's coming next. Newest first.

v0.3.0

Tools

July 17, 2026
  • A tool bar while you fly, on F / 1 / 2 / 3 — because a captured cursor can't click anything.
  • Index (F) frees the mouse and opens your whole library as a masonry grid: search, sort by date, size or name, and gather photos into folders. Star your favourites and they float to the top.
  • Select (2) outlines photos in neon — left-click for cyan, right-click for an x-ray outline that shows through everything. A compass along the top tracks where your outlined photos are while you fly.
  • Linking — middle-click photos to chain them together with lines in 3D. Hide everything else with H, save your constellations as link maps, and open one in its own 3D viewer.
  • Capture (3) gives you a viewfinder and takes a clean shot of the galaxy, HUD excluded.
  • Custom hotkeys — rebind almost anything from the controls sheet (?), unbind what you don't want, reset any key.
  • Timeline fast-travel — a scrubber you can drag through your history, a year list, and [ / ] to hop year to year. Handy when your library spans decades.
  • Photos can be moved to folders or deleted to the Recycle Bin, and the inspect view now reads the lens, aperture, shutter and ISO out of your shots.
  • Auto-updates land with this build: from 0.3.0 on, new versions install with one click.
v0.2.0

Formations

July 5, 2026
  • Explore now opens a formations picker — choose how your whole library arranges itself: Zones, Timeline, Organize, or Galaxy.
  • Timeline strings your photos along a line by date added, with month and year markers to fly through your history.
  • Organize turns your library into a real planet — Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and more — placing photos by colour to recreate its surface (blue oceans, green land, white ice), tilted to its real axis, with moons orbiting around it.
  • Galaxy arranges everything into a slowly-turning spiral, a mini Milky Way of your memories.
  • A built-in radio with a curated playlist and smooth crossfades, delete-to-recycle-bin with a dissolve effect, an eye-opening reveal into flight, and a quiet update notifier.
v0.1.0

First flight

July 4, 2026
  • Your whole photo library becomes a 3D galaxy you fly through, clustered by folder into zones.
  • Free-fly with mouse-look and WASD; photos sharpen to full resolution as you get close.
  • Click any photo to lift it out as a 3D slab, shown with its date, camera, and location.
  • HEIC & AVIF support for iPhone photos, custom folder scanning, and a VRAM control for huge libraries.
  • Ambient spatial audio, a custom installer, and a portable build. Fully offline, nothing is uploaded.
